A Misdiagnosed Case of Aspiration Pneumonia due to Stellate Ganglion Block
Kim Tae-Kwan

Kim Yee-Suk
Abstract
Aspiration pneumonia, a common condition, particularly in hospitalized and older adults with compromised host defense mechansims, is caused the aspiraton of gastric or oropharyneal secertions. Preserved swallow function and the cough reflex are important defenses against oropharyngeal aspiration but medications including sedatives may impair the laryngeal protective functions and may lead to aspiration pneumonia in patient with decreased immunity. The stellate ganglion block (SGB) is used primarily in the treatment of upper extremity sympathetic dystrophy and for increase of blood flow to this area. Although it is comparatively safe and convenient procedure, because of the proximity of several major neural and vascular structures to the site of needle insertion, side effects and complications can occur. We reported the case was misunderstood as aspiration pneumonia due to SGB in a 35 year-old female patient with complex regional pain syndrome type II (CRPS).
